Fireproofing

With tensions rising and war in the air constantly, our work at the alchemist workshop has not been easy. Many were afraid and chosed to get mired in their work, seldom going outside to commune with other practicioners of magic.

One day, the Magister barged in. She told us she had been working on some ships, but she saw one major problem. The ships were made of wood, and since nether wood was particularly hard to work with when shipbuilding, it wasn't practical to build a hull out of. We were instructed to use the surplus of nether logs to concoct something to help fireproof the new ships, both from the possible fires at sea and from the experimental dragonfire cannons mounted on them.

While it took some effort, the request was reasonably simple. We managed to come up with a recipe in a week or so:

"Basic fireproofing liquid

Ingredients: 1x Crimson mushroom scale, 1x Clay ball, 1x Velerian, 1x Azoth powder, 8x Bottles, and a cauldron worth of water fit for alchemical purposes

Tools: Heated cauldron, Hand press, Flask, Stirring rod, Mortar and pestle.

Instructions: Use the hand press to extract sap from the crimson mushroom scales, and carefully collect it in a flask. Use the mortar and pestle to crush Velerian until it is but a fine powder, similar in consistency to flour.

Add the ingredients to the cauldron and heat it, but not so much as to boil the mixture inside. Stir the mixture for 10 minutes or more to ensure the consistency is uniform, ideally it should be that of a weak gel.

Kill the heat and bottle the liquid when it is warm enough to handle. Let bottles rest until ready"

This combination of ingredients seemed perfect for the request. While some may consider it expensive, Magister said she could procure these in bulk, and begin fireproofing her ships as well as various military buildings. Once peace comes we can expect to fireproof other buildings as well. Crimson mushroom scales were useful for their inherent fire resistance. The clay was used to ensure the desired consistency; we wouldn't want the liquid to seep through the entire ship and leave would we? Velerian had useful protective properties, we hoped it would help protect against the element of fire. And azoth powder to bind it all together into one mixture.

Curiously, when all was said and done the wood had began to sprout crimson mushrooms across much of the hull. It seems like the probiotic properties of the mushroom scales were preserved throughout the cooking process, and their spores ended up infecting the wood hulls, spreading their mycelium throughout. We hope this wonderful symbiosis yields us even better results.
