Yelga had learned to enjoy the silence. It had been a long time since Hekras had spoken to them asking for aide, long even, since the night of great violence that had seen their work undone, and their guard post was ever so quiet.there was a slight panic when their connection to the rest of the Amanita was severed, they'd have been the first to tell you about what a drastic change it was, to have that constant hum, pull and ebb of thoughts and feelings that had been you and to simply, not have it anymore. to have all that you considered yourself suddenly and rapidly torn from your mind leaving only the idea that you should know these things, that you should feel some way, but all that remains of you is some infinitesimally insignificant portion of your past, with just enough context to know that you used to be so much more.    but of course, that happened some time ago, and after speaking with the people of Theros and learning why it had occurred and over time how to think and act on their own, they found that there were likely worse things than the independence the unsolicited severing had invoked. and it was in that independence that they returned to their post once more, the colossal mushroom they had helped grow long since destroyed, but in it's place a towering construct, one they'd learn was dubbed a "Surge Needle" they never were sure what it's purpose was, and while they suspected that their greater self would have known, they were content to simply stand below, to keep out pests and the occasional drowned or overly ambitious crab and let the structure and it's tender's do their work. it was a pleasant, if uneventful existence, with the most exciting parts of the day being the occasional visit from an Astral Wisp as it played and cleaned or hearing Teyon's booming laughter from some joke one of the mages above uttered. and so this was how Yelga passed their days, standing near the entrance to the surge needle, largely left alone with little more than the humming of the surge needle and and the silence of their thoughts.    It was in that resplendent quiet that they were the first to notice when the humming of the surge needle began to get louder, not disconcertingly so, but by just enough that Yelga was able to tell, and while they were slightly curious at the increase in sound, it wasn't until a number of hours later as it's amplitude increased even farther that they began to be concerned, and waved their arms to attempt to gather the attention of a mage or other attendant, and quickly enough a small Wisp flew down from above    "Nnnnn?" it hummed inquisically in the musical tones wisps spoke in     "This is all a bit louder than it should be, isn't it?" Yelga half-shouted over the concussive humming. the wisp turned and looked around vaguely confused, before flying into one of the pillars to investigate, and a moment later, rapidly flying back out, it's blue glow replaced with an alarmingly bright orange, it flew around Yelga's head once, humming     "NnnNnnnn!" appreciatively of the warning, before flying in a pattern overhead and speeding off to the west. Yelga looked on, confused but happy they were able to help, as shortly after a small number of very tired mages were woken, and Yelga saw them bumbling through the sky like drunken bees to arrive at the surge needle, and shortly afterwords the humming started to calm, allowing Yelga to feel at ease for just a moment until they heard shouting from up above, and a loud cracking firework burst in the sky above the surge needle, lingering bright red in the air.    the shouting continued as Yelga watched a number more mages fly to the surge needle, it's platforms now a bustling metro of activity and a kaleidoscope of lights, Yelga leaned against the wall and watched all the activity above her, phrases like 'mana dispersal', 'otherside corruption', 'excessive ley flow', and 'rapid taint buildup' rained down from the mages above onto Yelga's deaf ears, as they stood and watched them panic from afar. Naturally however, as the mages panic continued and, more importantly in Yelga's mind, the towers of the surge needle started to hum louder once more, their own unease started to ramp up as well. it was because of this that they did not protest as a gaggle of astral wisps descended from the needle above and started pestering them, attempting to push and cajole Yelga off the small island the needle sat upon, but also why once they were across the river they couldn't help but watch     They didn't have to wait long, it wasn't more than a minute after they stepped off the island that it happened, a massive bell-like tone rang out from the needle, followed shortly by a blinding pillar of light, Yelga shielded their eyes from the bright beam as a shockwave knocked them off balance, seconds later as the light began to dim, they watched as large shards of glimmering stone started to be visible lurching from below the wall around the needle, as the grass and flowers of the isle it stood on slowly morphed and changed into sharp brittle crystal, and just as quickly as it had started, it ceased. Yelga looked around, confused and uncertain, but looking at the mages above and how their activity slowed, judged that the worst of things must be over, and walked back to investigate, finding the terrain greatly changed, the brittle diamond glass shattering under their boots as they observed the massive gouge the needle carved into the land, and the massive crystals that erupted from the earth around it.     it wasn't for another hour or so that one of the mages came and told them exactly what had happened, and while Yelga still didn't quite understand the technical bits, despite the mages' continued attempts, but yelga was all too happy to hear that it was all things that the needle was designed to do, and that mostly it had just happened a few days earlier than the mages had expected, something about a greater amount of Otherside Influence somewhere? they never could wrap their head around it, wouldn't the Other Side just be over by the water?      but the next few days had Yelga being much more busy than usual, they were treated like the de-facto expert on that land beneath the surge needle, and despite their lack of real knowledge about how all the magic and whatnot worked, they were happy to help coordinate the handfuls of people who now visited from time to time to collect the newly grown crystals, and make sure they didn't fall into the pit.
